Mouth Cancer Prevention

Lesions and ulcers in the mouth that persist for more than two weeks may cancerous. These should be checked by a dentist. The risks of mouth cancer can be severely reduced by avoiding a few bad habits.

  • Smoking – This is unhealthy at so many levels. The greatly increased risk of lung cancer has been known for decades. But smoking will also give rise to bad breath, a dry mouth, and an increased risk of tooth decay and gum infections. And it increases the risk of mouth cancer.
  • Vaping – This was marketed as the safer alternative to smoking. But safer is a relative term. It is almost as harmful as traditional smoking. Vaping uses an electronic device to heat a liquid that is then inhaled. The resulting vapour may contain nicotine or other chemicals, depending on the vaping liquid chosen. Early research suggests that all the different vaping liquids are quite risky, with some being worse than others. But there is no safe form of smoking or vaping.
  • Mouthwash – This was a news item a few years ago. Mouthwash with alcohol was found to increase the risk of mouth cancer. But some people misunderstood this and avoided all mouthwash. Mouthwash without alcohol is beneficial. It is possible that people were using mouthwash to get rid of ulcers, not knowing that the ulcers were already cancerous. And that the mouthwash was not always causing cancer. But there still seems to be a causal connection between cancer and alcohol. Use a good mouthwash without alcohol.
  • Drinking alcohol – While alcohol is socially acceptable it does pose some health problems. Alcohol will dry out the mouth and increase tooth decay and the risk of gum infections. It also increases the risk of oral cancer.
Wine seems to be the least risky alcohol beverage. we can lower the risk if we swallow immediately, and do not leave it in the mouth for too long.

Bad Breath

Dentist Castle Hill

‌‌
Nobody wants bad breath. It is an embarrassment, and possibly a symptom of an underlying problem.

We might have bad breath because of poor dental hygiene, because of a gum infection, because of a poor diet, or perhaps an imbalance of gut bacteria.

Castle Hill Dentist

Our first thought should be towards cleaning out teeth and gum. This is not too difficult, we just need to brush twice daily, floss and use mouthwash. we should also scrape our tongue.

Cleaning both helps our breath in the short term, and prevents most long term problems like gum infections and tooth decays.

If cleaning does not remove the bad breath probelm we should have a dentist check to see if there is an underlying cause.

‌‌
Some fresh breath tips:

– Brush twice daily, and floss once daily.
– Drink plenty of water. This keep the mouth moist. Bacteria will increase in a dry mouth
– Drink green tea – This fights bacteria and freshens breath
– Chew sugar free gum. This keeps the mouth hydrated. Gum with Xylitol sweetener will fight bacteria that causes tooth decay.
– Use a tongue scrapper
– Cut out as much junk food and sugar as possible
– Use mouth wash several times per day
– Chew some parsley a few times per day.
– Fresh breath mints (without sugar) can help.
– Look at diet. Low Carb diets will give bad breath for at least the first few weeks.
– Quit smoking and ecigarettes
– Take a pro-biotic. Bad gut bacteria will cause bad breath.
– Take some pre-biotics, to feed the healthy bacteria in the gut. Cold rice and cold potatoes (left in the fridge overnight) work quite well for this.

Have a dental check-up to see if there are any underlying reasons for your bad breath. Or just to make sure that everything is as good as it can be.

Canker Sores

Canker Sores

Dentist Baulkham Hills

‌‌Canker sores may seem like an annoying inconvenience. But they might also be a symptom of an underlying problem.
Canker sores are small ulcers in the mouth. They occur in about 20% of the population, more frequently in children and teenagers. Many people experience these sores for a few years in their youth, only to have them disappear before they are adults.

Canker sores are benign, not posing a serious threat to health. And they are not infectious. But it is easy to confuse canker sores with mouth cancer, which is serious. A mouth sore that does not disappear after 2 week might be a serious problem then needs to be checked by the dentist.

Baulkham Hills Dentist

‌‌Individual Canker sores last for about a week before they heal on their own accord, they may last longer if they rub against teeth or dental braces. They may come and go in stages, perhaps 3-6 times per year.
The cause of canker sores is still uncertain, but different individuals find that different foods or conditions will cause an outbreak. Basically, they are like an allergic reaction, with different people having a different allergic reaction that show the same symptoms.

Dental Baulkham Hills

‌‌Preventing canker sores can be tricky. In a few cases they can be traced back to a reaction to a certain acidic food. In more cases it is a matter of holistically improving the entire body health, eating a better balanced diet and improving gut bacteria. A super healthy individual will have less issues with canker sores, but perhaps still not be entirely free of the problem. Often, the individual finds that they are just a stage they go though during adolescence, disappearing when they become adults.

Baulkham Hills Dental

Good oral hygiene will help prevent canker sores to some extent. This will also prevents the sores from acquiring a secondary infection.

Many toothpastes will aggravate the pain of canker sores. This aggravation is causes by the foaming agent (sodium Lauryl Sulfate) in the paste. A few toothpaste are free form this flaming agent, and will cause far less pain. These toothpastes also seem to reduce the re-occurrence of the sores.

Treatment:

– Use non foaming toothpaste, free from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.
– Use mouthwash without alcohol and free from Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.
– Avoid spicy and acidic foods for a time to see if these are triggering the problem.
– Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
– Eat a super healthy diet so you get all the micro-nutrients.
– Use a salt water rinse several times per day. Or a Bicarb of soda rinse.
– Drink plenty of water.
– Get some vitamins preferably from food, or tablets if necessary.
– It helps to eat Raw tomato, turmeric, and natural yogurt as these seem to relieve the pain and help heal the sores.

About Children’s Dental Care

‌‌Children are all potential, but with no experience. We need to teach them good habits when they are young so they develop responsibility and independence later on. This applies to dental health as much as any part of their life.

The very first tooth will emerge when the child is about 1 year of age. A child should be taken to the dentist about this time.

The rest of the child’s teeth emerge at about the age of two. There should be 20 of the infant’s teeth. These teeth remain in the mouth for several years but are steadily lost and replaced by permanent teeth starting from about the age of 6. The last of the infant’s teeth should fall out and be replaced by the age of about 12 years (primary school age).

There will be 32 permanent teeth to replace the initial 20 infant teeth. The last 4 permanent teeth, the back wisdom teeth, come through much later, at the age of about 20

Even though the first set of teeth is not permanent it is important to look after them. It is too easy for initial problems with the infant’s teeth to carry over to the permanent teeth.

Get children into good habits when they are young:

  • Children mimic some adult behaviour. Let them watch you brush and clean your teeth. Show them what you do.
  • Novelty toothbrushes, with cartoon characters and timer lights, encourage good brushing.
  • Flavoured toothpaste appeal to children. They are low in fluoride because too much fluoride in children causes fluorosis. Use a pea size amount.
  • Children’s mouthwash is also low in fluoride. Teach them to spit out the mouthwash.
  • Make regular dental appointments for children as soon as the first tooth appears, or at the age of 1 year.
  • Have a playful pretend dental examination at home to alleviate the child’s potential fear of the dentist. Lie the child on a couch,
  • Shine a light in their mouth, and tap each tooth with the back of a toothbrush.
  • Ask the dentist about sealants for back teeth.
  • Encourage sugar-free gum, with Xylitol, which is healthy for teeth. This is far better than sugary junk food.

Few of us have naturally straight teeth. Many of us require braces or another corrective measure during our teenage years. These are awkward, even painful at first. But the results last the rest of our life, so the effort is worthwhile. Discuss any tooth alignment problems with your dentist.

Chewing on moderately tough food at a young age seems to help tooth development and straight teeth later on. The mechanism behind this is still uncertain, but it seems that chewing tough food helps to slightly enlarge the jaw, allowing slightly more room for the permanent teeth to emerge.

Make a booking at Castle Hill Dentist for Children’s dental Care

Help your child develop good dental habits when it is young, and this will benefit them for the rest of their life. Include regular dental appointments so any issues can be addressed before they become serious.

Why Do I Have Sensitive Teeth

Dentist Castle Hill

Ever have teeth that feel painful when exposed to hot or cold temperatures? These are sensitive teeth. There are several ways that teeth can become sensitive.

Thin Enamel

If the enamel on the surface of our teeth becomes too thin the tooth becomes sensitive feeling painful when we drink hot tea or eat cold ice cream.

Enamel becomes thin if it is brushed too hard, it we have often used a stiff bristle toothbrush, or if we habitually consume acidic drinks or foods. The nerve inside of the tooth becomes sensitive to outside temperatures because there is very little tooth enamel to provide insulation. So it directly feels the temperature of what we eat and drink.

Brushing too soon after meals.

Tooth Enamel can become thin over time if we are in the habit of brushing straight after meals. It would seem to be good advice to brush straight after meals. But unfortunately some acidic drinks and food will temporarily soften the enamel. So when we brush the plaque and food away we brush the enamel too!

It is best to wait 30 minutes after eating t brush. drink water after meals to clean teeth and dilute the acidic content of the mouth.

Receding Gums

If our gums recede, because of poor dental habits, gum disease or perhaps old age, the roots of the teeth are exposed. This makes the teeth sensitive to hot and cold.

Damaged and Decayed Teeth

A cavity or crack will make a tooth sensitive to hot and cold. This will only affect a single tooth, but often in a very painful way.

A damaged tooth will need to be treated by a dentist.

Treating Sensitive Teeth

  • There are several toothpastes designed for treating teeth that are already sensitive. Sensodyne in one brand. These need to be used for several week before they start to work. Do not rinse after use – leave the toothpaste on the teeth.
  • Diligently brush twice a day. Use mouthwash. And Floss once per day.
  • Brush gently with a soft bristle toothbrush.
  • Wait 30 minutes after eating and drinking before brushing, because tooth enamel is softened by some food and drinks.
  • Avoid acidic and sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice.
  • Drink plenty of water, especially after eating and drinking.
  • Chew sugar free gum, especially with Xylitol, to keep teeth clean.
  • Fluoride on the teeth and calcium in the diet will help strengthen tooth enamel, preventing sensitivity.
  • Avoid teeth whitening products, at least for the time being. These can make teeth more sensitive.

Castle Hill Dentist

Sensitive teeth are an on going problem. Diligent cleaning will greatly reduce the risk of developing sensitive teeth. Any teeth already damaged will need to be looked after by the dentist.

eCIGARETTES

Castle Hill Dental

The dangers of smoking are well known. In addition to lung cancer and gangrene smoking will also cause, or at least aggravate, many dental issues. It raises the risk of gum disease, greatly raises the risk of oral cancer, causes a dry mouth, and slows down the recovery after surgery.

eCigarettes (vaping) appeared on the market in around 2003. They were promoted as the safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. But safer is a relative word. While apparently not as bad as traditional smoking eCigarettes still put harmful chemicals into the body, and are especially harmful to dental health.

Baulkham Hills Dentist

eCigarettes do not produce smoke. Instead they produce a mist that contains nicotine, as well as other chemicals. The potential harm of nicotine is still debated, but it suspected to be harmful, with little indication of any benefits. But there is n debate about the other chemicals – they are definitely carcinogenic, and cause other problems.

The chemicals in eCigarette vapor will cause:

Lung cancer
Pancreatic cancer
Breast cancer
Dry mouth – leading to dental decay.
Bad breath
Increased risk of heart disease
Damaged Blood cells
Impairs immune system, leaving us open to infections and diseases.
Sore gums
Receding gums
Tooth sensitivity – hot and cold liquids feel painful
Some individuals find that it causes teeth grinding.
Ongoing use may cause tooth loss.

Some vaping liquids do not contain nicotine, so they should be less addictive. But there is still a risk of other chemicals in the vaping liquid causing harm, especially if they are heated to the point of becoming steam.

Winston Hills Dentist

Smoking and vaping are bad for our dental health. And our dental health impacts our overall health, greatly raising the risk of heart problems and dementia latter on. While a less harmful version of vaping might be possible in the future there is no way of knowing in advance if a new technology is safe.
It is best to avoid smoking and vaping, they have no conceivable benefits.

Smile

Dentist Kellyville

‌‌ Our smile make a big difference to our confidence and our social life. If we feel have compromised teeth we might feel less inclined to smile. We feel less attractive physically, and become a less open psychologically. But this is not too difficult to change.

Orthodontic Work

Few of us have perfectly straight teeth. Many people have their teeth straightened with braces in their teens, and benefit with neat teeth for the rest of their lives. Others have their teeth straightened with braces or Invisalign latter on.

It is never too late to have braces. They are inconvenient at first, but they only need to be worn for a year or two. After this the teeth will look and function far better, and be easier to maintain.

If the idea of wearing braces seems to extreme for an adult patient then they might be able to use Invisalign. This straightens teeth with an ongoing series of clear retainers, which are more comfortable and less noticeable than traditional braces. The only limit is that Invisalign can only solve moderate problems. Braces might be necessary for severe teeth straightening.

Dental Work

The colour and shape of teeth can be greatly improved with veneers, crowns and implants. These can also rectify some minor straightening problems.

Veneers cover the front of a tooth. They are ideal if the tooth is discoloured, pitted or slightly crooked. They can also be used to rectify smaller gaps between teeth.

Crowns replace the entire outer part of a tooth. The essentially give you an entirely new tooth. This new tooth can be straighter and better looking than the original. Crowns are made from a realistic looking material that can easily last for several decades.

Implants are similar to crowns on the outside. But they replace the inside of the tooth as well. Inside the implant is a metal post that bonds to the jawbone. Implants can easily last for decades with the same care and cleaning that we should give all our teeth.

Inlays, onlays replace part of a tooth that is damaged or mis-formed. They might replace the top of a back molar tooth.

Kellyville Dentist

We should look after our teeth both for the sake of being physiologically healthy and for the sake of maintaining our appearance. This means diligent daily cleaning of our teeth, regular dental visits, and having the dentist/orthodontist look after anything that we feel is an issue.

If we have our smile fixed the benefits can last for decades to come.

Flossing

Dentist Baulkham Hills

‌‌
Flossing is part of the trifecta of cleaning our mouth. We should brush, floss and use mouthwash daily if we are to keep our teeth and gums healthy.

About 30% of our tooth surface is between the teeth. Flossing is the most common way to clean these areas between the teeth. It is really effective for reaching these nooks and crannies. But there are a few alternative cleaning methods for these spaces, including water flossing and toothpicks.

While we should brush two or three times per day we need only floss once per day.

Baulkham Hills Dentist

‌‌ Many people neglect flossing. They rush the process or leave it out altogether. we should take 5 minutes to floss correctly. The benefits to our mouth, teeth and gums are worth the effort.

Technique:

  • Use about 50 cm of floss
  • Wrap either end of the floss around the index fingers of each hand and secure this with the thumbs. Leave about 20 cm of floss between the hands.
  • Rub the floss up and down between two teeth, making sure to rub against both adjacent surfaces.
  • Use a clean section of floss for the next two teeth. Do not reuse the same section of floss as you will simply spread the plaque and bacteria from the previous teeth.
  • Make sure to clean the spaces between all the teeth.

Dental Baulkham Hills

An alternative to traditional flossing is water flossing. This uses high pressure water from a special electrical device to clean between teeth. There are a few commercial devices made for this purpose. Waterpik is a common brand. regular use of these devices can be more effective than flossing, though the devices are expensive.

It is also possible to clean teeth with a floss stick. This has a small length of floss in a Y shaped holder. Some people find this holder makes flossing easier, but you need to constantly rinse the floss between each use (each tooth!!) or you will be cleaning with a dirty tool. A few dentist advise against these floss sticks.

Baulkham Hills Dental

Flossing goes a long way to reducing gum disease, and this has been shown to greatly reduce the long term risk of serious health problems like heart disease and dementia.

Flossing makes all the difference to our dental hygiene. Floss once per day.

COMPUTER DESIGN & DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dentist Kellyville

Modern technology finds applications in all areas. The computer aided design (CAD) and 3D Printing, which has become prevalent over the last generation, is used to produce replacement teeth that are superior to earlier substitute teeth.

Implants secured with titanium posts were first used in the 1960s. These proved superior to earlier replacement teeth because the titanium post would bond to the jawbone. Other materials would be rejected by the body. It was found that a titanium post implant with a porcelain tooth would last for several decades under normal conditions.

Of course everybody’s mouth has a different shape. So it can be tricky to make a replacement tooth that fits neatly in with the surrounding teeth. This is where computer aided design becomes useful.

Replacement teeth were always made to fit the individual’s mouth. For many years molds were made of the patients teeth, and any replacement teeth were made according to this. The patients bite (how the top and bottom teeth fitted together) was also a factor here. But this older method has been largely superseded by computer technology. It is now fairly easy to make a complete computer model of an individuals mouth, including the movement of their jaw, and to make custom designed implants to fit this individual. This is far more accurate than a physical mold.

3D printing means that a replacement implanted tooth can be manufactured to very exactly fit the surrounding teeth. This is far better than merely shaping a generic implant. Use of CAD and computer manufacturing for 3D printing of teeth makes the production of a replacement tooth very streamline.

The visible part of the implant, the part hat looks like a natural tooth, can be made of ziriconia or lithium disilicate. These are both strong and can be manufactured with 3D printing. This makes then superior to the older porcelain implants which could not be 3D printed, and which were not quite as strong.

Kellyville Dental

Replacement teeth are not just about aesthetics. Of course they are needed for the mouth the function properly; they allow us to chew food and speak clearly, as if we still had our natural teeth. But implants are also important for maintaining the long term health of the mouth. If there is a gap left by a missing tooth then the surrounding teeth tend to shift, causing alignment problems. This can also lead to jaw alignment problems. Implants help keep the other teeth neatly in place.
